Margaret River, Western Australia

Another weekend and another trip, though this one was for longer than a weekend!

We went to Perth for 11 days, 4 of which we spent down south in the Margaret River region. Margaret river is one of my most favourite places there are, to me it’s the perfect mix of beach, forest & fun. There are so many things to do, see and eat regardless of your interests and budgets.

We picked up a little Airbnb and travelled around by car.

My favourite activities down there are (in no particular order):

Ngilgi Cave

In the region there are plenty of caves to visit, we chose just to visit the one. There are 2 main areas to the cave a big wide open area that has been used for performances in the past and a much more cavernous area. It was pretty amazing to see it and imagining what it might have been like when the caves were first discovered. I recommend checking out a cave or two when you’re down there.

There are 2 lighthouses in the region, the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse and Cape Naturaliste. We visited the Cape Naturaliste lighthouse because of its proximity to Sugarloaf Rock and Dunsborough.

You can take a tour of the lighthouse for a small fee (or get it with the caves package for a discount) or you can just walk up to the lighthouse for a small donation. We went with the second option.  There are some beautiful views of the Ocean and coast though so it’s worth spending the extra few $ for the view!

Sugarloaf Rock

This place is amazing, listening and seeing the waves crashing up on the rock.  The day we were there it was pouring down with rain and extremely windy, but I went for a bit of an adventure down to the coast line and got some photos.

You can see the rain in the distance too (on the right-hand side).  The views of the coastline are superb, and even though it was raining & windy it’s definitely worth it; for me, it made it even better.

Surfer’s Point

Surfer’s point is a beautiful location to hang out, take some photos & go for a swim. The sand is clean and golden, there is plenty of parking. It is also very close to rivermouth, where the Ocean Meets the river. You Can park the car and take a nice walk from here.

There are countless places to visit in Margaret River, those are just a few of my personal favourites.

You may also want to check out:

  • Margaret River Chocolate Factory & Providores – The chocolate is yummy (plenty of free samples!), Ice cream is out of this world too. My personal favourite is the chilli chocolate (I took some of this to Mt Everest Basecamp in 2016). Providores sells Jams, Spice Rubs, Liqueurs and other fine delicacies.
  • Margaret River Dairy Company – Cheese, nothing more needs to be said! Once again, lots of samples and the cheese is wonderful. I love the smokey cheddar. Also have a walk around and look at the beautiful view!
